Meet Our Faculty

Matthew Wooller

Matthew Wooller is the Lead Data Strategist and Evangelist at Codento, and he keeps his hand in on the technical side of things by contributing engineering and architecture to client work where required.

Wooller has over thirty years of experience working on data-centric projects with companies such as MTV Networks Europe and Asia, the UKTV group, Sulake, Rovio, and Sanoma. In the past ten years, he has returned to consulting (it is where he started) and worked with global brands across many and varied domains to deliver data-led initiatives and instill a data-driven mindset. sentences)

Henri Schildt

Henri Schildt is a Professor of Strategy at Aalto University School of Business and Aalto University School of Science.

Professor Henri Schildt’s research interests span technology strategy, organizational change, and strategy process (with specific interest in reasoning under uncertainty and the use of data analytics). He is currently heading two research programs on data-driven management and the management of digitalization in Finnish manufacturing companies.

He is a tenured professor with a joint appointment at the Aalto University School of Business and the School of Science’s Department of Industrial Engineering and Management.

Henri Schildt completed his PhD at Helsinki University of Technology in 2007.

Kari Hiekkanen

Kari Hiekkanen is a Research Fellow at the Department of Computer Science at Aalto University. He has extensive experience in various IT management and leadership roles in R&D and management consulting.

Hiekkanen has over 20 years of experience combining IT and strategy in various industries. He has a solid knowledge of IT management practices, enterprise architecture, and IT governance both as a practitioner and educator. Hiekkanen's research interests include the industrial Internet and the digitalization of Industries. He is an expert on machine learning, deep learning, and artificial intelligence.

Kimmo Karhu

Kimmo Karhu is an Assistant Professor, at Aalto University Department of Industrial Engineering and Management.

Karhu is an expert on platform business models and a seasoned teacher on digital strategy. By combining hands-on industry experience with academic thinking, he seeks to explain how AI, machine learning, and other technologies can be leveraged for scaling platform business. Karhu's recent doctoral thesis analyses open platform strategizing and digital tactics in mobile ecosystems.

Tomi Kauppinen

Tomi Kauppinen is the head of Aalto Online Learning at Aalto University. His background is in media technology and computer science. He aspires to bring an entrepreneurial mindset and lean and agile creativity to all his projects and teaching.

Tomi Kauppinen is Head of Aalto Online Learning at Aalto University. He holds a habilitation (2014) in geoinformatics from the University of Muenster in Germany and the title of docent (2014), a Ph.D. (2010) in media technology from Aalto University, and an M.Sc. (2004) in computer science from the University of Helsinki. Kauppinen's passion is to create, study, and teach information visualization, spatial thinking, cognitive systems/artificial intelligence, and blended learning design. Since 2016, he has led the Aalto University-wide strategic development initiative, Aalto Online Learning, which covers activities ranging from blended learning to fully online textbooks and exercises, from video production to online social interaction, from artificial intelligence-based recommendations and assessment to interactive visual simulations, and from augmented/virtual reality to games and gamification. With his background in startups before a calling to academia, he aspires to bring an entrepreneurial mindset and lean and agile creativity to all his projects and teaching.

Iiris Lahti

Iris Lahti is specialized in driving the utilization of data and helping companies to evolve their data driven culture, scale up their data capabilities and gain sustainable business value from data and AI solutions.  

For the past 15+ years, she has been focusing on understanding and resolving how different companies find the most relevant data and refine and integrate it into their business processes and daily work. She has worked as a business controller, a consultant helping clients in various industries to utilize the full potential of their data and analytics systems, and as a development director of data utilization in Sanoma Media Finland. Her role at Sanoma was to drive the company-wide data-driven culture transformation and lead a team of 20+ analysts and data scientists supporting consumer sales, media content design, customer service, and digital service development operations.

She is a founding partner of AI Roots, a network and agency for data professionals. At AI Roots, she helped companies across various industries build winning data teams and exploit the potential of data through the right skills and talent.

Currently she works at Saidot, contributing to the development of an AI governance platform aiming at supporting the responsible usage of AI in organizations.

Eeva Vilkkumaa

Eeva Vilkkumaa is an Assistant Professor of Management Science in the Department of Information and Service Economy at Aalto University.

Professor Vilkkumaa is an expert in modeling uncertainties and developing mathematical models to support decision making and resource allocation at companies and public organizations.

Jari Ylitalo

Jari Ylitalo, PhD, is a University Lecturer in Leadership at Aalto University School of Science and Aalto Ventures Program.

He teaches, in particular, master's students on leadership, teamwork, and self-management.

Ylitalo's pedagogical approach emphasises a dialogical and resource-oriented approach. He also works as a supervisor, coach, and workplace facilitator. He has a long and diverse experience in coaching and developing leaders, management teams, and organisations in both corporate and public organisations.

Ylitalo's research has focused on leadership and leadership development, with a particular emphasis on the effectiveness of guidance, resource-centred and dialogue-based development approaches. He has also studied the social dynamics and development of cooperation and partnerships between companies and organisations, as well as network management and the development of a network approach.
