System Dynamics as a Modelling Tool for Engineering and Manufacturing

Welcome to this two-hour Aalto EE Master Class delving into the principles and applications of System Dynamics as a modelling tool. After this Master Class you will have a basic understanding of how to model dynamic systems, and how it can be applied in the engineering and manufacturing space.

System Dynamics is a modelling tool intended to understand how a system changes over time when subjected to a set of known inputs. This has obvious benefits in the engineering and manufacturing fields since understanding the behaviour of a system can influence operations which, in turn, could lead to greater efficiencies and lower costs. You will be introduced to some of the System Dynamics graphical modelling techniques, how these techniques relate to the underlying mathematical models, and tools which allow them to be implemented so that you can evaluate system behaviours without the need for complex mathematical calculations.

During this Master Class you’ll have an opportunity to ask questions and engage in a discussion with the session educator, developing your systems thinking and modelling knowledge. Secure your spot for the live Master Class now!

Benefits

This Master Class will broaden the participants’ understanding of modelling using system dynamics principles.

For?

This Master Class is suitable for individuals and organisations that are interested in modelling systems to observe the dynamic behaviour. Whilst the application to be demonstrated will be oriented towards the engineering and manufacturing space, the principles are generic and can be applied to any field.

Contents and Schedule

After this two-hour Master Class session, you should be able to:

  • Define modelling and system dynamics.
  • Understand several of the techniques, architectures, and tools for system dynamics modelling.
  • Develop basic generic models using causal loop diagrams and level-rate diagrams.
  • Grasp the development thought process related to a model oriented towards the engineering and manufacturing space.

Craig Carlson

Craig is a lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation at Aalto University.

Before he started his adventures at Aalto, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at Tampere University, working on other-than-diagnostic uses of medical ultrasound. This closely related to his PhD research, which he completed at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in South Africa where he was also working as an associate lecturer. Craig has many years of experience lecturing on the topic of system dynamics, with his most common audience being from the fields of medicine, health science, and pharmacology.
