Physical security of water utilities is more relevant than ever before.
Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine and hybrid threats targeting Europe require a new level of preparedness and vigilance from professionals working in water services and other critical infrastructure sectors.
This course provides a practical understanding of how physical security can be maintained and improved in the current environment, including at water utilities with limited resources. The course has been developed in collaboration with Aalto University, Ramboll Oy, and Sweco as part of the FYTU project.

Vesihuollon fyysinen turvallisuus online course provides water sector professionals with practical tools and knowledge for strengthening the resilience of critical infrastructure in a changing security environment. The course presents physical security concepts in a clear and accessible way, helping participants understand how everyday actions and workplace practices contribute to the overall protection of water services. The advanced section focuses on strategic and resource-efficient approaches to improving security, while also highlighting the importance of cooperation and networking between water utilities. Through interactive materials and real-world examples, including experiences from Ukrainian water utilities during wartime, the course promotes a practical and proactive security culture across the sector.

The course is intended for all water-sector professionals in Finland, from summer employees to management. Water utility security is a shared responsibility, and every employee plays an important role in maintaining it.
Content and Schedule
This self-paced course is divided into two sections:
Part 1: Fundamentals of Security
This section is intended for everyone working at a water utility, from operational staff to management. It focuses on everyday physical security and the role of employees as a cornerstone of overall security.
