Continuing Education Program Preparing for RAPS Certification
The Kestävä rakennuttaja is a university-level training program that introduces you to sustainable construction, project planning for developers, and the management of projects and people in a changing business environment.
The training meets the professional development needs of construction industry experts and is ideally suited for, for example, construction industry educators and government officials. This FISE-approved training provides a strong theoretical foundation for applying for the Senior Project Owner (RAPS) qualification. Upon completing the program, participants will be eligible to apply for the RAPS qualification through the standard application process.
Kestävä rakennuttaja training program comprehensively develops your project management expertise and ensures your professional competence in managing the construction of projects that are demanding in terms of quality, technology, and economics. In addition, the training equips you to serve as a manager within a project management organization.

The program is designed for individuals who have earned a higher education degree in construction or engineering, a previous higher vocational level degree, or an equivalent qualification, and who, upon completion of the program, will be eligible to apply for the senior project owner's RAPS certification.
The program is suitable for anyone in a leadership role within the real estate and construction industry, such as developers, clients, contractors, consultants, architects, project managers, and lead designers. It is also suitable for refreshing one’s knowledge and for individuals who wish to familiarize themselves with sustainable construction, project planning for developers, and managing projects and people in a changing business environment.
Contents and Schedule
During the program, we will cover the following topics:
- Development prospects in the construction industry, responsible and sustainable construction, the roles of the developer
- Design project management and stakeholders
- Construction project management
- Diverse project formats
- People management in projects and communication/interaction skills
The program is worth 10 credits and is completed over approximately six months. There are around two (2) teaching days per month. Instructors include experts from Aalto University as well as various research institutes, industry associations, and companies.
The program combines on-site and online learning. The on-site component (10 days) consists of lectures by experts, case presentations, and guided, practical small-group and individual exercises. Online learning consists of practical assignments and exercises completed between in-person sessions, as well as project work that supports your own work and is linked to the program’s themes. The language of instruction is Finnish, but some materials may be in English.
In addition to on-site teaching and familiarization with the materials, the 10-credit program includes assignments that have been carefully designed by experts to support learning:
- Developing personal impact
- Exercises between on-site teaching sessions
- Practice exam in the learning environment
- Practical project work that supports your own work
Project work is supervised by Olli Seppänen and Antti Peltokorpi, associate professors of operations management in construction at Aalto University, Department of Civil Engineering.

Instructors
Jukka Heinonen
Jukka Taneli Heinonen currently works as a Professor of Sustainable Built Environment at the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Iceland.
Having graduated in Economics from Helsinki University, he obtained a PhD from Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland.
Heinonen specializes in the challenges of sustainable development in community structures and lifestyles. His main fields of research are consumption-based urban carbon footprinting and low-carbon urban settlements.
Jukka Heinonen has developed research approaches and analysis methods specifically for modeling indirect and outsourced emissions from the built environment. He is one of the world’s top 1,000 climate change researchers on the list published by Reuters in 2021, and in a recent study, he was named one of the world’s top 10 carbon footprint researchers.
Antti Peltokorpi
Antti Peltokorpi is an Associate Professor of operations management in construction at Aalto University, Department of Civil Engineering.
In his research he has focused on modularity and industrialization in construction, AI and data-based transformation of the sector, and digital supply chain management. He has over 100 scientific publications on these topics. Peltokorpi is also a Vice Dean for Impact at School of Engineering. Besides his academic merits, he works in close collaboration with the AEC industry.
Olli Seppänen
Olli Seppänen is an Associate professor of operations management in construction at Aalto University, Department of Civil Engineering.
He has focused on lean and digital production planning and control and design management. He has over 100 scientific publications on these topics and has also 15 years of practical consulting experience before joining academia.
Jari Ylitalo
Jari Ylitalo, PhD, is a University Lecturer in Leadership at Aalto University School of Science and Aalto Ventures Program.
He teaches, in particular, master's students on leadership, teamwork, and self-management.
Ylitalo's pedagogical approach emphasises a dialogical and resource-oriented approach. He also works as a supervisor, coach, and workplace facilitator. He has a long and diverse experience in coaching and developing leaders, management teams, and organisations in both corporate and public organisations.
Ylitalo's research has focused on leadership and leadership development, with a particular emphasis on the effectiveness of guidance, resource-centred and dialogue-based development approaches. He has also studied the social dynamics and development of cooperation and partnerships between companies and organisations, as well as network management and the development of a network approach.
