During the program, we will touch on several timely topics in the area of digital transformation, focusing especially on the technology and data perspective. While emphasizing the transformative powers of digital, this module aims to provide a balanced view by also reflecting on the enabling and supporting role of digital.
We will start the module by discussing digitalization and platform economy, the key learning objective is to form a unified understanding and model of digital platform markets. What are the fundamental pillars that apply to all distinct types of platforms, such as innovation, information, transaction, and marketplace platforms?
We will also discuss how the implementation of digital technology strategies and business models has progressed in companies and industries. Additionally, we will explore the role of new innovation networks and technology management behind those new strategy implementations.
Also, one central theme for this module is the role of data in building a high-performing digital business and what kind of roles, skills, collaboration models, and working modes are needed to succeed in data development efforts.

Iris Lahti is specialized in driving the utilization of data and helping companies to evolve their data driven culture, scale up their data capabilities and gain sustainable business value from data and AI solutions.
For the past 15+ years she has been focusing to understand and resolve how different companies find the most relevant data and refine and integrate it to their business processes and daily work. She has worked as a business controller, a consultant helping clients in various industries to utilize the full potential of their data and analytics systems, and as a development director of data utilization in Sanoma Media Finland. Her role at Sanoma was to drive the company wide data driven culture transformation and lead a team of 20+ analyst and data scientists supporting consumer sales, media content design, customer service and digital service development operations.
She is a founding partner of AI Roots, a network and agency for data professionals. She is currently helping companies across various industries to build winning data teams and exploit the potential of data through the right skills and talent.
Kimmo Karhu is an Assistant Professor, at Aalto University Department of Industrial Engineering and Management.
Karhu is an expert on platform business models and a seasoned teacher on digital strategy. By combining hands-on industry experience with academic thinking, he seeks to explain how AI, machine learning, and other technologies can be leveraged for scaling platform business. Karhu's recent doctoral thesis analyses open platform strategizing and digital tactics in mobile ecosystems.
Dr. Timo Seppälä works as University Lecturer of Operations Management at the Aalto University and as Research at The Research Institute of the Finnish Economy, ETLA.
His research interest lie in contemporary global phenomena like digitalization, platform economy and global value chains as well as strategic management and internationalization of firms.
Seppälä's areas of expertise include Business Intelligence and Analyses, Global Business Unit and Account Management, Strategic and Operative Business Development, Supplier and Customer Relationship Management, and Contract Negotiations.
Dr. Seppälä has over 15 years of business experience in several Finnish and international companies for example Metso, OMG Kokkola Chemicals, Oracle, Elcoteq, and SAP.
