The original JOKO is an international exception – very few programs reach the 50-year mark and a hundred implementations

Continuous renewal has kept the AaltoJOKO® training at the top of managers’ list of favorites throughout the years.

JOKO will soon return to its birthplace in the former main building of Aalto University School of Business. At the end of 2020, Aalto EE will move into the former main building of Aalto University School of Business, creating the largest hub of leadership and professional development in the Nordic countries. Each year, around 7,000 key persons from 1,000 organizations participate in the programs offered by Aalto University Executive Education (Aalto EE). One of the long-lasting stars of Aalto EE’s extensive offering has been the JOKO management program, which has been running for 50 years and will start for the 100th time today. In spite of its registered trademark, the JOKO program has been copied in the form of more limited training in various contexts, which is why the original training package is known today as AaltoJOKO®.

Thanks to the continuous renewal of the program content, AaltoJOKO® has an exceptionally long lifecycle. However, there are two things that have not changed: AaltoJOKO® provides support for the personal growth of a leader and helps them rise to the challenge of strategic leadership.

“JOKO has been the anchor in developing the leadership of many major organizations over long periods of time while creating a common language and platform for them. JOKO alumni have progressed to top positions and continued their growth through other training as well. As with any classic, the most important skill is the ability to renew oneself, and JOKO has been developed continuously throughout the years. It is the only way to ensure its next 50 years,” says Pekka Mattila, Group Managing Director for Aalto EE and Professor of Practice at Aalto University School of Business.

“The participants have also praised the training for its peer learning opportunities and broad perspective. What is new to one industry may be everyday life in another, which means that other participants can give you valuable insights into your work. We believe in the value of learning together, which is clearly reflected also in AaltoJOKO®,” explains Minna Wickholm, Business Area Director, Open Programs at Aalto EE.

JOKO will soon return to its birthplace in the former main building of Aalto University School of Business

At the end of 2020, Aalto EE will move into the former main building of Aalto University School of Business, creating the largest hub of leadership and professional development in the Nordic countries. This iconic building is currently being renovated and modernized.

This means that AaltoJOKO® training will return to its birthplace where its first program started at Helsinki School of Economics in 1970. The start of the program resulted in the establishment of Aalto EE’s predecessor organization. The training also gave its name to JOKO Executive Education Ltd., established in 1996, which is known today as the global Aalto EE.
