Corporate Responsibility is Put to the Test When People Are Laid Off – Aalto PRO Offers an Extensive Service Package for Coping with and Managing Change Situations

Rapid developments in the global economy are forcing companies to react by taking adjustment measures, such as laying off staff. At such times, corporate responsibility is put under a magnifying glass. Aalto University Professional Development (Aalto PRO) has been helping companies and job seekers in situations like these for more than 25 years. It now offers an even more comprehensive support service for companies facing change that combines career guidance with change training. The package is always tailored to the current needs of the company facing staff reductions.

“A responsible employer makes sure that lay-offs too are handled in an appropriate and humane way. Both the employees losing their job and those staying in the organization need support. Managers also need all the help they can get in these tough situations, which are often linked to a broader transformation within the company. Our task is to support the company throughout so that the needs of all the parties involved are taken into account. As part of the university, we see this as part of our social responsibility and our mission to create a better world through better leadership,” says Minna Wickholm, Director in charge of the Aalto PRO service package.

Well-designed and forward-looking change security arrangements put the employees being laid off in an excellent position to find new employment quickly.

“In addition to career guidance, we offer change training which provides persons being made redundant an important opportunity to update their professional skills. This will support faster re-employment,” says Minna Wickholm.

Aalto PRO has been involved in several leading companies' change programs over the past 10 years, the most notable examples of which are Nokia Bridge and Microsoft Polku.

Aalto PRO has helped more than 5,000 people find employment with the help of their F.E.C. programs. Take, for example, Esa Vennola who is currently working at Signal Partners as Director of Operations. He previously worked in the transport and logistics sector. When his employer initiated co-operation negotiations, he began to think about changing careers.

“In my case, the co-operation negotiations were a worrying, but also lucky event. I had been entertaining the idea of a career change and now it became a reality. I decided to take a risk: to jump out of my old life and discover something completely new,” Esa Vennola says.
